The majority of smallholders in low-income countries are involved in domestic food value chains. Yet there are often challenges for smallholders employed within domestic value chains, such as poor business models and lack of infrastructure, which can impact negatively on employment, product quality and inclusivity.
The CGIAR ‘Rethinking Food Markets’ Research Initiative explores innovations for making domestic food value chains more inclusive and sustainable for smallholder farmers, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the target countries of Nigeria, Uganda, Guatemala and Honduras. The focus is on bundled innovations that can improve:
- Inclusive business models and value chain contracts
- Product quality and food standard certification
- An enabling policy environment for the sustainable development of domestic value chains
