According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), decent work refers to productive employment that provides a fair income, workplace security, social protection, and opportunities for personal development and social integration. It also includes the freedom for individuals to express their concerns, organise, and participate in decisions that affect their lives, with equal opportunity and treatment for all.
The ILO’s Decent Work Agenda focuses on job creation, rights at work, social protection, and social dialogue, with gender equality as a cross-cutting objective. This agenda is a key component of global efforts to achieve inclusive economic growth, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, as reflected in Goal 8 of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This is the definition of decent work that was used in the meta-study on employment creation through agri-food value chain development. The information was retrieved from the ILO website in 2023.
